The Legend of Princess Owatonna
Why the name “Owatonna”?
Legend has it…
Chief Wabena learned of the healing waters known as minnewaucan. His frail daughter, Princess Owatonna, prompted him to move his tribe to the natural springs along Maple Creek. Drinking from the springs daily, Princess Owatonna regained her health. Her gentle spirit is said to linger near the bubbling waters, inviting weary travelers to rest in the beautiful valley and drink from the magical springs.
True Origins…
For centuries before the arrival of white settlers, Native Americans camped along a river they named “Ouitunya,” meaning “straight,” which is now the major river in Steele County.
Owatonna invites you to visit the springs and see the statue of Princess Owatonna at Mineral Springs Park.
